This course is a must for the entire dental team!  No one likes to think that a medical emergency will happen in their office. The fact is a medical emergency in a dental office can alter the course of your dental practice and your patients. This course is designed to teach dentists and their teams what needs to be in a medical emergency kit and how to develop strategies to identify and respond to medical problems including syncope, allergic problems, cardiovascular abnormalities, diabetes and respiratory distress.  Every member of your dental team should know how to prevent and respond to medical emergencies and how to administer what is in your emergency medical kit.

  • Review the ADA recommendations for a medical emergency kit in the dental office
  • Should I have an AED in my office and which AED is best for a dental office
  • Using pulse oximetry during dental treatment and medical emergencies
  • Understanding and administering each medication in your medical emergency kit
  • What medications you should have and which medications you should not have
  • Identifying the signs and symptoms of the most likely medical emergencies
  • When to call 911 and when not to call 911
  • The best ways to avoid having a medical emergency in your office

At the completion of this course, attendees should be able to:

  • List the most important and ADA recommended emergency medications to have in your office
  • Discuss initial treatment for emergency situations
  • Demonstrate safe and appropriate administration of medications, including an intramuscular injection
  • Discuss when it is appropriate to call 911
  • Understand how to use the medications in the emergency drug kit
