Although cosmetic procedures are often associated with women, the number of men receiving cosmetic procedures continues to steadily rise. Now more than ever, men are seeking injectables, like Botox® and dermal fillers, to minimize any signs of aging and maintain a youthful look.
One of the main cosmetic procedures men are choosing is Botox®, or as ABC News has coined it, “Bro-tox.” In 2011, over 300,000 men got Botox® with some even receiving the treatment as gifts from the women in their lives.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported a 400% increase in the amount of money men spent on Botox® treatments since 2000, making it the most highly sought after cosmetic procedure for men. In 2020, approximately 265,000 men had Botox® procedures, further reinforcing this as the top cosmetic choice for males.
Even though men and women often pursue Botox® treatments for similar reasons, healthcare professionals state that treatments differ based on gender and men often need more Botox® than women to achieve similar effects.
“For example, in the glabellar area, for a similar effect, I start women with about 15 units of Botox and go up as needed to achieve the desired result,” board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Bruce Hermann said. “For men, I would normally recommend starting with 20 units and adjusting from there.”
Dr. Hermann said that men also prefer a more “subtle effect” in the glabellar area, so he typically uses a higher dosage per area on men, but “injects within a smaller surface area.” He also shared that he believes these trends will continue overtime, with men and women both continuing to seek cosmetic procedures to improve similar signs of aging amongst other appearance-related concerns.
